The Importance of Well-Woman Visits

The Importance of Preventative Care for Women’s Health

When it comes to women looking after their reproductive health, having routine well-woman visits is key. In recognition of Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, the health experts at Antelope Valley Medical Center are here to shed some light on the many ways that having regular gynecological exams can help to safeguard your health.

Physical Exam

During the physical portion of your wellness exam, your OB/GYN will look for any visible signs of reproductive health issues. You can expect the following components of your physical exam:

  • An external visual exam.
  • Manual exam.
  • Speculum exam.
  • Pap smear.
  • Breast exam.

Typically, your doctor will look for lumps and bumps that may be a cause for concern, such as:

  • Changes in organ placement,
  • Cysts or growths.
  • Signs of irritation.
  • Lesions.
  • Signs of infection.

Cancer Screenings

Like many other health issues, early detection is key when it comes to the effective treatment of cancers that may affect your reproductive health. Depending on your age and risk factors, your doctor may check for the following forms of cancer during your well-woman exam:

  • Breast cancer
  • Cervical cancer

Urinalysis

It’s also normal for your gynecologist to ask for a urine sample to send off to a lab for urinalysis. This can help your gynecologist determine if you’re pregnant or have any sexually transmitted diseases or infections.

If you have any additional questions about your gynecological health, be sure to reach out to your women’s health care team.
