Your Guide to Drinking Responsibly
In light of National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, the health experts at Antelope Valley Medical Center are here to share some tips to help keep you safe during the holiday season and beyond.
Drunk Driving Statistics
Driving under the influence of alcohol affect the American public in the following ways:
10,000 people die each year due to alcohol-related traffic accidents.
Over 1 million people are arrested for driving under the influence each year.
More than 111 million people self-report driving under the influence annually.
How Much is One Drink?
Most people have heard the rule of thumb that your body is able to break down about one alcoholic beverage per hour—but what exactly does that mean? The truth is, this is heavily dependent on the type of alcohol being consumed.
The following guidelines are considered “one” serving size of each type of alcohol:
- Beer: 12 ounce glass.
- Wine: 5 ounce glass.
- Distilled spirits: 1.5 ounce shot glass.
- Liquor: 1.5 ounce shot glass.
Additional Drinking Safety Tips
In addition to paying attention to how much you’re drinking, the following tips can help to keep you and your community safe this holiday season:
- Buzzed driving is still drunk driving.
- Always have a designated driver.
- Call a cab when you can’t drive yourself.
- Don’t allow your friends to drink and drive.
- Don’t leave your drink unattended.
- Pay attention to how you feel.
