Artistry Abounds at “Strokes for Stroke” Class

Antelope Valley Medical Center will present a free "Strokes for Stroke" art therapy and painting class for stroke survivors and their caregivers from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 7 at the hospital’s community resource center, 44151 15th St. West. The program encourages stroke survivors and their caregivers to rehabilitate through art.

Presented in association with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, the class will include a free lunch for participants.

"This form of therapy is designed for all levels of stroke recovery and tailored to focus on techniques that stimulate brain function and improve hand-eye coordination," said Stroke Program Coordinator Colleen Littlejohn, RN. "Don’t worry about channeling Monet or Picasso, just pick up a brush and have fun."

Antelope Valley Medical Center has the area’s only designated Advanced Primary Stroke Center and cares for more than 800 stroke patients each year. In 2017 the hospital’s average "door-to-needle" time – the time it takes for a stroke patient to be diagnosed and treated upon entering the hospital – was 49 minutes, which beats the national average. Nearly 90% of the hospital’s cases had a door-to-needle time of 60 minutes or less, the national "Target Stroke" performance goal set by the American Stroke Association.
