Bariatric Program Providing AV Residents a New Lease on Life

Lancaster, CA, June 23, 2021 – David Conrad contacted Dr. John Yadegar after feeling defeated by his weight. As a previous fit and athletic person, in addition to valid concerns from his family, he felt it was time to make a change. After an extensive patient evaluation, both David and Dr. Yadegar decided that Sleeve Gastrectomy would be the best weight-loss option. A resident of Tehachapi, Mr. Conrad traveled to Lancaster to become one of AVMC’s first successful bariatric surgeries.
Since his surgery, David has adjusted incredibly well to his new healthy life style and has lost over 80 pounds. “I’m the happiest man, this side of California,” said Mr. Conrad. “Before surgery I had thrombosis, diabetes, and kidney problems; after the surgery I am no longer a diabetic.” David shared that ultimately, his motivation was sparked by his family and wanting to see his granddaughter get married and his grandson graduate from high school. He goes on to say, “For anyone who asks me about getting it done, I’d say go and do it. It’ll make your life better and let you do things that you wouldn’t think you could do. Two weeks after, I’ve noticed the difference and I’ve lost the cravings to eat large quantities of food.”
Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for morbid obese patients, because it allows patients to safely sustain considerable weight-loss, while improving other obesity-related health conditions.
Antelope Valley Medical Center’s Bariatric program will meet the needs of the patient in a multidisciplinary
setting, in order to reach optimal outcome. Patients will be provided the resources they need, not only to prepare for surgery, but to succeed well after the surgery; this includes dietary education and support groups. Patients will be assessed for three different bariatric procedures: Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, and Adjustable Laproscopic Banding.
“Mr. Conrad’s great achievement, highlights how significant a patient’s commitment to the required life style changes is, and in making a successful weight loss journey. In addition, it is a testament to the dedication, expertise and support provided by the bariatric team at AVMC, to whom I am most grateful. The ongoing engagement of a patient in continuing a healthy life style including diet and exercise will ensure long term sustained weight loss success, and resolution of associated medical problems,” said John Yadegar, M.D., Bariatric Surgeon, Antelope Valley Medical Center. “I congratulate Mr. Conrad in overcoming his adversities, for a job well done and for his dedication to a healthier life and a new beginning.”
