(LANCASTER, CA – December 17, 2024) – Antelope Valley Medical Center (AVMC) has launched its first Food Distribution Program, addressing food insecurity in the community. This program provides critical nutritional support to oncology patients, ensuring they have access to healthy, nutrient-rich food as they navigate their treatment journey.
"Nutrition plays a vital role in the health and recovery of oncology patients," said Christy Monteith, RN, OCN, FNP-C, Cancer Program Coordinator at AVMC. "We recognize that food insecurity can add unnecessary stress and barriers for our patients, and this program is a step toward creating a stronger, healthier community."
The program will provide food packages tailored to meet the dietary needs of oncology patients. These packages include fresh produce, high-protein staples, and other nutritious items essential for supporting overall health during cancer treatment. Patients receiving care at AVMC’s oncology department will have the opportunity to enroll in the program and receive these distributions at no cost.
In partnership with the Antelope Valley YMCA, best known for its commitment to fostering community wellness, will support the program through its network of volunteers and logistical expertise. Food distributions will take place at the YMCA Lancaster location, ensuring ease and accessibility for patients.
“Our Comprehensive Community Cancer Center is a first-class service for oncology patients, and this initiative is a testament to that,” said Edward Mirzabegian, AVMC Chief Executive Officer. “I’m appreciative of our team who focus not only on physical health but also on the social determinants of health, such as food security.”
